Public Relations Curriculum

Student Learning Outcomes for a Public Relations Major

At the completion of the Public Relations major, the graduate is able to:

  1. Apply the principles of primary and secondary research to public relations situations.
  2. Create effective public relations plans using fundamental planning components that include situation analysis, public profile, objectives, strategies and tactics.
  3. Create effective, objective-oriented PR materials in a variety of formats and for different publics.

  • ADPR 2200 (ADPR 8), Media Writing, or JOUR 8, News Media Writing – 3 credits
  • ADPR 1400 (ADPR 140) Advertising Principles – 3 credits
  • ADPR 2400 (ADPR 142) Strategic Research for Advertising and Public Relations – 3 credits
  • ADPR 3200 (ADPR 143) Marketing Communications Design and Production – 3 credits
  • COMM 3900 (COMM 161) Ethical Problems of Mass Communication – 3 credits
  • COMM 3800 (COMM 165) Media Law – 3 credits
  • ADPR 1800 (ADPR 180) Public Relations Principles – 3 credits
  • ADPR 3600 (ADPR 181) Public Relations Writing – 3 credits
  • PURE 4997 (ADPR 183) Public Relations Campaigns – 3 credits
  • ADPR 3986 (ADPR 193) Internship in ADPR – 3 credits
  • ADPR/BREC/CMST/JOUR electives – 2 credits
The following courses are also required but do not count as hours in the major:
  • ECON 2003 (ECON 43) Principles of Microeconomics – 3 credits
  • MARK 3001 (MARK 140) Introduction to Marketing – 3 credits
  • PSYC 1001 (PSYC 1) General Psychology – 3 credits
One of the following three courses:
  • MATH 1700 (MATH 60) Modern Elementary Statistics – 3 credits
  • PSYC 2001 (PSYC 60) Psychological Measurements and Statistics – 4 credits
  • MANA 2028 (MANA 28) Business Statistics – 3 credits
Public relations majors must also choose one course from the following:
  • CMST 2000 (CMST 52) Introduction to Small Group Communication – 3 credits
  • CMST 3200 (CMST 132) Organizational Communication – 3 credits
  • CMST 3300 (CMST 154) Persuasion – 3 credits
