The philosopher John Dewey once wrote that “Of all affairs, communication is the most wonderful.” I have always approached the study of media and communication in that spirit. In our acts of communication, we summons up the world to lend it sense and make it intelligible for one another, but also to give ourselves shape and weight as human beings. I enjoy teaching at Marquette University because it deeply values that work of human formation. Our care for persons makes the Diederich College a wonderful place to study communication, media professions, and the digital and performing arts.
My 1991 article “A beginner’s guide to doing qualitative research in mass communication,” which continues to be taught in media research classes across the U.S., was honored in 2012 by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication as one of the top dozen manuscripts published in the 46-year history of Journalism and Communication Monographs.

John J. Pauly Award for Outstanding Student Achievement, Saint Louis University, 2003-present. Awarded annually to honor a graduating communication major who hopes to put his or her education in the service of democracy, in careers such as political journalism, public interest law, government service, community organizing, or civil rights advocacy.
