Masterclass with Documentary Filmmaker Marshall Curry: Join a masterclass with Marshall Curry, director of the Academy Award-nominated films Street Fight and If a Tree Falls. The class will be an in-depth view into his process and experience as a documentarian -- from finding a story, to interviewing techniques, shooting tips, editing and crafting a story from footage. Event will be held in the JPad, Johnston Hall room 104.

National News Engagement Day: Imagine a day where everyone engages with news in some form or fashion. That's the idea behind National News Engagement Day – a day to encourage people of any age to read, watch, tweet, post, text, email, listen to, or comment on news. An initiative of Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication President Paula Poindexter, National News Engagement Day was created to make engaging news a priority in society again. Three "posting" stations will be set up on campus. In the morning, stations will be set up in Johnston Hall and the Weasler Auditorium, and in the AMU in the afternoon. Nieman Conference | Data Visualization: The conference will focus on data and new technology. Speakers will address aspects of data visualization and journalism, the need for statistical reasoning and numeracy, data visualization as a design problem, big data vs. journalistic data, the ethics of data visualization and journalism and the ethics of data mining and analytics. Speakers: Mark Horvit from IRE will talk about data visualization and journalism. Kelly McBride from Poynter will talk about the ethics of data and journalism. Bob Griffin will talk about the importance of statistical reasoning as the basics for understanding and presenting data visually. Andrea Brennen from MIT/Lincoln Lab, will talk about data visualization as a design problem.
